Environmental & Way finding Graphic Design

Client:

IKEA

Challenge:

Improve customer flow at the restaurant entrance by encouraging shoppers to leave trolleys and bags outside, reducing congestion while communicating the message in a clear, positive, and family-friendly way.

Responsibilities:

Led the concept development and design of an environmental graphics solution, from site assessment and visual ideation through to production and installation. Collaborated with stakeholders to create an intuitive wayfinding intervention that aligned with IKEA's brand identity while influencing customer behaviour within a busy retail environment.

This project focused on improving the customer experience at the entrance to IKEA's restaurant by addressing congestion caused by trolleys and shopping bags. After assessing the physical environment, I developed a series of large-format wall graphics that used familiar IKEA products and the iconic FRAKTA bag to create an intuitive visual cue, encouraging customers to hang bags on existing wall pegs before entering. By combining environmental graphics, humour, and behavioural design principles, the solution communicated the desired action without relying on extensive written instructions. Installed on two prominent walls, the graphics integrated seamlessly with the surrounding environment while supporting improved customer flow and creating a more welcoming restaurant entrance.
