In-Store Visual Planning System Design

Client:

IKEA

Challenge:

Help customers navigate the complexity of IKEA's PAX wardrobe range by creating a clear and scalable in-store planning system that supported decision-making and improved the shopping experience.

Responsibilities:

Led the design and development of a modular visual planning system, working closely with retail stakeholders to define customer information needs and establish a clear information hierarchy. Created the visual framework, layout structure, production artwork, and installation approach, ensuring the system remained flexible, scalable, and aligned with IKEA's brand standards.

This project focused on improving how customers engaged with IKEA's PAX wardrobe range by simplifying a complex product planning process within the retail environment. Working alongside the Visual Merchandiser and Bedrooms Manager, I identified key decision-making information and developed a modular visual system that guided customers through the configuration process step by step. Through digital prototyping and spatial planning, I tested hierarchy, readability, and customer flow to ensure information could be understood from multiple viewing distances. The final solution combined modular diagrams, large-format graphics, and clear information architecture to create an intuitive planning experience that could evolve alongside the product range. Following installation, the system improved customer engagement, supported more effective conversations with store co-workers, and contributed to a 12% increase in department sales within two weeks.
