This project involved designing a reusable wayfinding and service communication system to guide customers to an alternative lift during outages at IKEA. The aim was to replace temporary printed notices with a durable and easy-to-deploy solution that improved the customer experience while reducing operational disruption for store teams.

After identifying a recurring issue with last-minute requests for lift diversion signage, I developed a numbered pull-up banner system that could be stored centrally and quickly deployed when needed. Each banner corresponded to a specific in-store location, creating a clear step-by-step route for customers to follow. To support consistent setup, I also created a placement reference guide with photographs showing the correct positioning for each banner.

The visual design aligned with IKEA’s existing wayfinding language, drawing on the familiar blue information boards used throughout the store. Clear typography and concise messaging ensured the diversion route was easy to understand and follow within a busy retail environment.

The reusable system significantly reduced reactive printing and setup time during lift outages. Customers were able to navigate the diversion route independently, reducing the need for co-workers to provide directions while also minimising material waste through a reusable signage solution.
